What is Diwali ? The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “row of lights”. Deepavali itself is formed from the words dīpa—'lamp, light, lantern, candle, that which glows, shines, illuminates or knowledge'—and āvali—'a row, range, continuous line, series'. Devotees often light these diyas inside and outside their homes during the festival to represent the light that guards against spiritual darkness and symbolizes good over evil. For many Hindus, Diwali is also a time for Dana (Charitable Giving) and Seva (Selfless Service). It is worth noting that Diwali is connected to various religious events and deities, and so the exact religious significance of Diwali varies regionally within India. Even so, many hold the shared belief that the light from the lamps they light symbolizes the illumination within all of us, which can overcome the darkness of ignorance.
Who are the Children of Thavnair ? We are a collective group of people who not only enjoy the cultural aspects of Thavnair, but also respect the sources used in the making of Thavnair, drawn from Indian mythology, Hindu religious beliefs, and cultures across the Indian subcontinent. Ever learning, we strive to bring more Thavnarian culture into the FFXIV roleplaying scene with not only enthusiasm, but headcanons supported by studying of the culture. You can find us engaging in open world roleplay events, cultural festivals like this one, hosting venues with Thavnairian themes, and engaging with one-another in joined roleplay plotlines.
Do I have to be Thavnarian/Hindu to celebrate ? Not at all! Please come and dance with us, roleplay with us, and join in the fun and festivities! Eat, socialize, have some fireworks to play with, and be merry; we welcome you with open arms and open hearts.
